Handy Small Kitchen Tools

Handy Small Kitchen ToolsI love cooking, but I want to make preparing the food easy and fun. So I look for things that make light work of prepping. I have had these five handy small tools in my kitchen for quite some time and love to use them.

They are all well made and durable and served me well.

All of these are highly rated. Yes a couple are a bit "pricey", but the quality is great. The old adage "you get what you pay for" sure rings true with all of these. Durable and reliable are the key things for me.

So here are the five that I consider my favorites.

Wusthof Classic Chef 2 Piece Knife Set
Wusthof Classic Chef 2 Piece Knife Set

These two Wusthof Classic knives are my favorites. They are easy to use, feel right in my hand and most importantly cut like a dream. For a while after getting these several years ago I kept all my knives in the drawer. After a while I discarded most of my knives, keeping only a couple of specialty ones that I occasionally use. But these two are almost all I need! The two knives are a 3.5 inch paring knife and a 6 inch chef's knife. These two sizes are almost all a person needs for every day kitchen prep.

They are easy care too. Just rinse them, dry them and put them away. Although I have put them in the dishwasher occasionally and they are still fine, I don't think they recommend that.

I bought the knife sharpener and knife covers sole on the same page too. The covers are a good protection for the blade as these puppies are sharp! And I only sharpen them once in a while, but the sharpener is nice to have.

Epicurean Kitchen Series Cutting Boards
Epicurean Kitchen Series Cutting Boards

Of course with good knives you also need good cutting boards! I love my Epicurean ones.

The Epicurean series of cutting boards comes in natural wood fibers. This means they have the properties of a good wood cutting board, but can be put into the dishwasher. And they don't need to be oiled like wood ones. This is a win-win-situation for me.

They also can stand heat so I use mine as a trivet for hot pans sometimes. There is a hole to hang them, although I just lay mine up against the wall in the space behind my mixer too store them.

Yes, them - as I have two - one for meats and one for all the rest.

Fishonly Fast Metal Thawing and Defrosting Tray with Silicone Edge
Fishonly Fast Metal Thawing and Defrosting Tray with Silicone Edge

I has used the defrosting try I have for many years, but now I need a new one. The tray I had got pitted and started looking kinda yucky. Also it did not have an edge or lip to it and so the juices ran on the counter when things were defrosting. So I decided to try and find one that would solve those two problems.

The best one I have found is this one. It solves all of my problems as it is dishwasher safe and has a silicone lip to keep the juices in and not run all over the counter.
By the way the word Fishonly is the brand name, not that you can only defrost fish! LOL!

Westmark Germany Multipurpose Stainless Steel Wire Egg Slicer
Westmark Germany Multipurpose Stainless Steel Wire Egg Slicer

I have had an egg slicer for year. It is a plastic one and has served me well. I use it all the time to slice eggs. With a slice one way an d then the other the eggs are perfectly chopped for a garnish or egg salad, etc.

I am just about ready to replace mine as the slicing wires are starting to bed a bit. So I have decided to replace it with this Westmark one.

This is dishwasher safe and looks easy to clean. Since there is a 5 year warranty on it, I expect that it will last a long time. After all Westmark is a company that makes good products and stands behind them,

5 Blade Spiralizer Spiral Slicer and Noodle Maker
5 Blade Spiralizer Spiral Slicer and Noodle Maker

When I first saw vegetable being "spiralized" I ran out and got one of those hand held gadgets that you turn- sort of shaped like an egg timer. Well that didn't do a very good job and was messy to clean, so I gave up. Then the Spiralizer came along and I just had to get one.

I love using it for so many things. Of course I make Zucchini "Noodles" all the time, but I also use it for lots of other veggies I have made both white and sweet potato "curly fries". I love it for carrots and cucumber. And it is fun to use it for salad fixings too.
